Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk

花了几个月的时间，断断续续读这本英文畅销书，脑子里首先填了一堆关于赌博工具的英文单词。这是一部以概率理论发展史为主线的畅销书（在国内的话，畅销谈不上，此书的读者群较窄，针对金融理论爱好者），本书像一部记录片的脚本。题目Against the God书中主题与金融关系没那么大，既没God啥事，也谈不上Against。以16世纪意大利学者卡尔达诺（Girolamo Cardano）研究掷骰子赌博问题开头，斐波那契、帕斯卡（Pascal）、费马（Fermat）伯努利家族有关成员等等文艺复兴时期的数学大师次第出场，讲到一半篇幅逐渐过渡到经济金融理论。对概率论没兴趣，对经济史不熟悉的读者，想把全书读完，着实会比较头疼。
读本书，吊起了我对科学发展史的兴趣。现在的教科书是我们获取知识的主要来源，但教科书内容干巴巴，大师们探索理论的过程大多隐而不谈，只留下结论让学生学习记忆。这样，课程学完了，试考过了，知识也就逐渐淡忘了，概率与统计也是如此。现在虽然脑袋里还有大数定律、中心极限定理的印象，也有时候用到，但对为什么数学家会倒腾出这些东西并不知晓。读这本书恰恰能补充这方面的不足。概率论的起源在于文艺复兴时期想从赌场取胜豪客，也得益于闲来爱思考的数学家的孜孜以求。那时候的欧洲还没什么学术组织，大学才开始逐渐成型。科学家必须在贵族、富人身边帮忙混饭吃，或者像费马那样做个法官公务员啥的糊口养家，远没有今天学者、学术权威的体面。一些法国数学、科学爱好的聚会、通信使科学研究成果逐渐在圈子中传播，这些私人聚会慢慢固定下来，并受到富人和统治者的关注，朝着固定化、俱乐部化的方向发展。其中以英国的Royal society达到了相对的顶峰。研究精英被这个学者俱乐部接纳，就意味着其观点或理论及在学界的江湖地位被当时的学术圈和上层人士所认可，正如当今学者戴上院士或学部委员的头衔。不同的是，当上成为Royal society成员的有很多小年轻，不像我国院士那样多已德高望重。
